Solo Leveling is the Korean webtoon that helped define the modern hunter-and-dungeon genre. Adapted from Chugong’s web novel, with art by Jang Sung-rak (DUBU) of Redice Studio, it follows one hunter’s climb from the very bottom to the very top.
Synopsis
10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters“. However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of dungeons, the “World’s Weakest“. Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled dungeons… at least until I found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeons! In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise. Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!
What Solo Leveling Is About
Ten years before the story begins, Gates opened between our world and a world of monsters, and some ordinary people gained the power to fight inside them. These Hunters are ranked by strength, and Sung Jin-Woo sits near the bottom as an E-rank known as the World’s Weakest.
He barely makes a living clearing low-level dungeons, until he stumbles into a hidden, extremely difficult dungeon within a D-rank Gate. Facing death, he receives a strange power: a quest log only he can see. By following its quests and hunting monsters he can level up, setting him on the path from the weakest Hunter to an S-rank.
Tone and Themes
Solo Leveling is known for its sense of escalation. Each arc raises the stakes, and the dramatic, full-color art makes the battles feel huge. It is a power fantasy at heart, but the early chapters carry real dread, and Jin-Woo’s growing isolation adds weight. Themes include perseverance, responsibility and what power costs.
Who Should Read Solo Leveling?
It is an ideal starting point for newcomers to manhwa and a must-read for fans of leveling systems, dungeon raids and dark-fantasy action. Content note: it includes intense monster violence and some disturbing scenes.
