Mercenary Enrollment is a Korean action-drama webtoon about a teenager with a battlefield past trying to live a normal school life. It pairs high-school comedy with sudden, precise action, and its lead’s protective streak gives it real heart.
Synopsis
At the age of eight, Ijin Yu lost his parents in a plane crash and became stranded in a foreign land, forced to become a child mercenary in order to stay alive. He returns home ten years later to be reunited with his family in Korea, where food and shelter are plenty and everything seems peaceful.
What Mercenary Enrollment Is About
At eight years old, Ijin Yu lost his parents in a plane crash and was stranded abroad, where he survived by becoming a child mercenary. Ten years later he comes home to Korea and is reunited with his family, in a place where food and shelter are plentiful and life seems peaceful.
The contrast is the engine of the series. Ijin’s instincts and skills were made for war zones, yet he now has to deal with classes, classmates, bullies and family duties. Watching him apply mercenary logic to everyday problems, and protect the people he cares about, is what keeps readers coming back.
Tone and Themes
The series mixes school-life humour and warm family scenes with tense, efficient fights. Ijin’s calm competence makes the action satisfying, while his attempts to fit in supply comedy and quiet drama. Themes include trauma and recovery, family loyalty and standing up to bullying.
Who Should Read Mercenary Enrollment?
It suits readers who like action-heavy school stories, cool-headed protagonists and series with a strong sense of justice. Fans of military or mercenary backstories will enjoy it most. Content note: it references a child soldier past and includes fighting and bullying.
