Ichi the Witch is a Japanese fantasy manga serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump, written by Osamu Nishi with art by Shiro Usazaki. It builds a magic system with a striking rule: magic is not studied, it is hunted.
Synopsis
From Viz:
In this world, witches must hunt down their magic! Deep in the forest, the terrifying king of magic and the strongest witch are locked in deadly combat. But suddenly, a young boy joins the fray. His name is Ichi and he is just a hunter. But he has the power to flip the magic world upside down in this magic-hunting fantasy epic.
What Ichi the Witch Is About
In this world, witches must track down and capture magic itself. The opening sets the stakes: deep in a forest, the terrifying king of magic and the strongest witch are locked in deadly combat.
Into that fight walks Ichi, a young boy who is “just a hunter.” He has no witch’s training, yet he holds the power to turn the magic world upside down. The series follows how a hunter’s practical skills and stubbornness collide with the rules and traditions of witches, in what the official blurb calls a magic-hunting fantasy epic.
Tone and Themes
Expect energetic shounen adventure with a strong comedic streak. Ichi’s blunt, hunter’s view of the world often clashes with witch customs, which keeps the dialogue funny even when the fights are serious. Themes include breaking tradition, earning respect and treating power as something you must face rather than own.
Who Should Read Ichi the Witch?
Fans of fresh magic systems, Jump-style adventure and wild-child protagonists should give it a try. It is a good fit if you enjoy series that mix comedy and big fights. Expect fantasy action and creature combat.

Where to Start Ichi the Witch
Start with chapter one, which drops you straight into the battle between the king of magic and the strongest witch. The opening explains how magic hunting works, so later chapters are much easier to follow if you begin there and read in order.
